SUCCESS ACCOMPANIES SERENA'S NEW DRESS

As comebacks go, this may not have rivaled Scarlett O'Hara's, but it did reintroduce one of Scarlett's costume spiderman pull-yourself-together standbys - the corset - to the game.

In pristine white from headband to sneakers (her MTV-style catsuit labeled "history"), Serena described her wide silver waistband to dumb male reporters like me as "a corset. It's designed to make me look very slim. It really brings in your waist. We [she and her new Nike needle-and-threaders] call it the 'corset dress.' Look, I'm really into looking really good on court. I told them [the designers] I don't have to be very comfortable."

I thought the corset was a cummerbund, but . . . "Makes you slim, Serena? Very interesting. Men, too?"

However, her $60 million rags trade bankrollers make it clear that zentai bodysuit the dress will not be available to you - or me. Just Serena.

By this time, you realize that for a while, anyway, top-seeded Serena thinks of herself more as a clothes horse than a warhorse. Probably no one in this injury-diluted tournament will alter that outlook, except possibly Jennifer Capriati (finalist to Serena the last two years), or second-seeded Big Sister, Venus, who continues her own comeback today against No. 63 Jie Zheng.

For the moment, Little Sister is commercial hype, appearance, and costume spiderman  "Hollywood glam," as she calls it, letting the serves (5 aces, 6 service winners, no break points offered), volleys, and groundies take care of themselves.

Her old man, Richard Williams, gives an accurate appraisal of her first outing since winning Wimbledon 2003: "How can anybody judge how she's doing in a match like that? The poor kid [21-year-old Marrero, a qualifier ranked No. 83] Catsuits was playing against a reputation and couldn't do much."
