Going to New York City!?

I'm going on a bus trip with my mom to New York! We live tomorrow evening and will arrive Saturday morning. I have no clue what to wear! Its going to be warm, but my mom said no short shorts or flip flops. I have to wear walking shoes, so I'm going to wear my black and white DC's tennis shoes. Probably with a pair of bermuda shorts, and some kinda shirt. I want to be cute, yet comfy. I'm going to carry a tote bag, probably a hollister one, so that I can put small purchases inside. We do plan on buying a few fake purses in Chinatown, but we'll get bag when we buy them. Anytips? I live in Ohio, and I've never been to NYC! My mom has though. Plus we're meeting relatives later on saturday. Anything to tell me before I leave? Thanksss (:

Yes, wear exactly that because when it is hot over there it is hot. If those tennis shoes are comfortable for you then go with them. You will be walking lots in NY. I suggest you be very careful with your purse, especially if you going on a bus trip even when your in NY. I'm sure your mother knows about staying safe in NY. Also, make sure you stay close to the person you with, because over there you get lost easily with so many people in the streets. Have a safe trip and have fun. Don't forget to try the pizza you will never have a better pizza than in NY. : )

'n' of the balls are yellow.
The other 7 balls are white.

John will take at random a ball from the bag.
He will look at its colour and then put it back in the bag.

a) (i) Write down an expression, in terms of n, for the probability that John will take a white ball.

(ii) prove that Bills statement cannot be correct
After John out the ball back into the bag, Mary will then take at random a ball from the bag.
She will note its colour.
c) Given that the probability that John and Mary will take balls with different colours is 4/9,
prove that 2n^2 -35n +98=0

OK, the propbability of picking a colour out of a total, is the number of times that colour occurs in the mix divided by the total in the mix.

For (i), the number of times white occurs is 7. The total is n+7. So the proabability of picking a white tennis ball is 7 / ( n + 7).

In (ii), Bill gives a definite probability of picking a white tennis ball, so using the previous formula, we should be able to work out how many yellow balls (n) there are. The 2/5 is probability of picking a white ball, as is 7 / ( n + 7 ), so the two are equal:

2 / 5 = 7 / ( n + 7 )

Multiply both sides by 5:

2 = 35 / (n + 7 )

Multiply both sides by ( n + 7 )

2 * ( n + 7 ) = 35

Expand the barckets:

( 2 * n ) + 14 = 35

Minus 14 from both sides:

2 * n = 21

Divide both sides by 2:

n = 10.5

As one can not have half a ball, the probability can not be 2/5.

Now we come to (c):
We know the probability of a white is 7 / ( n + 7 ).
The same logic measn that yellow is n / ( n + 7 ).
AND in probability means multiply, so white AND yellow:
7 / ( n + 7 ) * n / ( n + 7 )
And we are told this equals 4/9.
First task is to multiply the chances:

7 * n = 7 * n

( n + 7 ) * ( n + 7 ) = n^2 + 7 * n + 7 * n + 49 = n ^ 2 + 14 * n + 49

so we end up with:

7 * n / ( n ^ 2 + 14 * n + 49 ) = 4 / 9

Multiply by 9:

63 * n / ( n ^ 2 + 14 * n + 49 ) = 4

Multiply by ( n ^ 2 + 14 * n + 49 ):

63 * n = 4 * ( n ^ 2 + 14 * n + 49 )

Expand the brackets:

63 * n = 4 * n ^ 2 + 56 * n + 196

Minus 63 * n:
