Why are there small holes in my vintage fountain pens lid?
And no, I don't mean where the pen fits in!
It has 2 small holes about midway down the lid, circular and roughly on opposite sides, but not level with each other. I have seen this on a different vintage pen too. Are they part of the manufacturing process? (Or have they perhaps been 'drilled' by someone in an effort to remove a 'stuck' lid?)

I think that the pen was made a long time before any 'choking' hazards were recognised (or legislated for!), and the pen lid is in fact quite large.
The holes are drilled during manufacturing to prevent a vacuum from forming. If not present the ink would be drawn out of the reservoir every time you removed the top, and there would be ink all over your hands and clothing..
