A Big Year on PEI
This just might be PEI's ultimate year to shine! Even as the rest of the world talks of economic downturn and recession, PEI is expecting a year of visitors in greater numbers than normal. Our population of 140,000 normally swells to 1 million or so in the summer with tourists and summer residents.
With all this and a rosy looking summer it is simply icing on the cake that this year reality show "Big Break" will premier on the Golf Channel and PEI will host the 2009 Canada Summer games. The attention that these events bring to the island will definitely increase the interest in the island and the value of PEI real estate.
Twice PEI has earned the distinction of being the top Canadian golf destination as decided by Score Magazine. Despite its small size PEI's rolling landscape makes it ideal for building golf courses. PEI boasts 26 golf courses from the well known Links at Crowbush Cove, to Dundarave and Brudenell River. Mill River Golf Course, PEI's popular golf course located west of Summerside, was the site of Golf Channel’s popular "Big Break" series. This reality golf show was made in 2008 and will be aired this year on the Golf Channel. The first airing of Big Break Prince Edward Island is April 20 on the Golf Channel Network. Twelve contestants will play twelve elimination rounds. The final two will compete in a match to determine the winner. The contestants are Aaron Wright, Brenda McLarnon, Eugene Smith, Gerina Mendoza, Robert read, Caroline Larsson, Derek Gillespie, Nicole Sikora, William Thompson, Blair O'Neal, Brian Skatell and Kim Kouwabunpat. As the first Canadian destination of this new reality series, PEI will be exposed to golf enthusiasts throughout North America and even internationally.
The 2009 Canada Games, PEI's second "big break" this year is a multi-sport and cultural event that brings together the best athletes in a specified age group from each Canadian province and territory. All the provinces have hosted at least one Canada Games and this will be the second for PEI having hosted the 1991 Canada Winter Games. The games attract on average over 50,000 competitors and attendees.
The games will host events all over the island, helping to spread the positive economic impact fairly through all communities. Sports this year include Basketball, Cycling, Diving, Rugby, Sailing, Soccer, Tennis, Triathlon, Beach Volleyball, Wrestling, Rowing, Baseball, Golf, Swimming, Athletics, Kayaking and Canoeing, and Volleyball.
