Whose initial goes first in a traditional monogram?

I know for weddings its the brides that goes first, but for regular things you want to monogram, like towels, does the mans initial go first?
These are for something I am ordering for myself.

Marrianna, in what you wrote "The man is never separated from his last initial, then wouldnt that mean that his initial would go first, since the big initial (last name initial) is his last name?
I am not talking about on a wedding invite, which I know the womans goes first, I am talking on say a set of engraved glasses, the mans goes first right?

Thankfully my husband and I have first names that start with the same letter, so we never had to deal with this problem. LOL
