Towel Monogrammed Personalized

monogramming business?

OK I want to start a monogramming business but I'm not sure where to start. I haven't done any kind of monogramming before but I LOVE it.. I have bought so much of other people’s items and I think to myself why don't I make my own items and sell them...So here are some questions
Where do people by the handbags, clothing, towels, aprons, etc...
I know some people make them but many of them have them made...
What kind of machine and other items would I need?
Can I do this if I have not done this before?
Something else I like is personalized stationary, what would I need to make that??

I have a home based embroidery business. To start the embroidery machine can cost anywhere from $300. to $5,000. depending on the quaility and size of the embroidery area if wil cover as well as the brand. A home embroidery machine will not withstand a busy embroidery business. If you plan on doing only a little on a part time basis, then a home embroidery machine would be fine. If you want to go big time, you are talking more than $5,000.

You can't just jump into it. It takes a some practice and education as far as type of material/needle/stabilizers/thread/designs that go together. Then you have to be able to know how to make adjustments if something doesn't quite come out the way you thought it should. It really takes a while before anyone can really be good enough to get it right every time. Otherwise, you are replacing the item you were trying to embroider on and goofed up. Can get expensive.

As for stock, there are wholesalers to buy your blank items from. Different suppliers have different requirements when it comes to the size of their minimum order, etc. You would have to decide what you wanted to embroider on and then do research to find someone willing to sell that item at a price you think you can make money on at the minimum they require.

There is a lot more to it than just setting the machine and walking away. I wish you the best and if I can be of any help feel free to contact me. I have had an embroidery machine for 7 years and been in business for 2 1/2 years and I consider myself to still be learning everyday.

I would find a yahoo group for beginning embroidery and join. You can learn a lot from reading others questions and answers and then you can decide if you are ready to jump in.

Personalized stationary would be an easier, less expensive way to go. You could start with some interesting papers and hand lettering or stamps. You can be creative with the designs and really make them unique with items from you local craft store to start. Once you build up a requirement for larger quantities, then you can find wholesale suppliers for the items you like to use the best and that are the most popular with your customers.

I have done all kinds of crafts and sewing all my life and that is a long time! LOL
