As I have stated on numerous occasions, guns can be used for a combination of things, including, but not limited to, hunting, target shooting, and enjoyment. I’ll be the first to agree with you that guns are not toys, and that they can be very dangerous. Gun safety ***should be*** ingrained into the minds of every gun owner after taking the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, which is required to obtain PAL licenses, and firearms. Whether or not these people retain this knowledge and skill of firearm safety is a whole other issue. I believe that for the most part, gun owners are very responsible. Go in to any gun store, shooting range, or even internet forum, break any one of the four rules of firearm safety, and people will not hesitate to let you know that “you dun goofed!” I do agree with you in that if you don’t plan to shoot the guns you own, you really have no business owning firearms. I also personally have something against people who buy a $1500 tactical rifle, insert a 30 round magazine pinned to “5 rounds only” and think they are cool. But that’s just a personal preference thing, as I believe that if you’re going to spend the money on something, you should use it to its fullest potential. >A sport is about the activity; not the equipment. Like I said above, I totally agree, but I don’t believe there is anything wrong in having certain preferences for your equipment, or attachment (even an emotional one) to your equipment. I’m not saying I’m in love with my guns, although I do take great care of them. There are people out there who do love their sport cars, musical instruments, electronics. >I don’t think there is any real way to determine and legislate the difference between a fondler and a person who has a use for a gun Yes, I agree. And on a side note, I will admit, I have fondled my guns, as I was genuinely intrigued by its mechanical operation and design. One could even say I appreciated their beauty. >besides restricting particular models and types of guns that don’t have sporting purpose. No, I do not agree. I don’t believe taking away the guns is a meaningful response. For one, it doesn’t actually accomplish anything other than to create more work for the governments to enforce. And it also slowly erodes at “what is needed” for sporting purposes as defined by someone who doesn’t use guns for sporting purposes. I guess what it may come down to is subjective utility, and perceived utility of firearms. Someone who has no interest in firearms or shooting sports will deem it useless, just as tennis rackets would be useless for me. >This is why I disagree with people owning automatic weapons, and handguns. Automatics are another ball of wax, and really have no place in the current discussion, since here in Canada, they are prohibited for civilian ownership anyways. As such, I haven’t really developed a strong opinion for either side of the argument. But to play the devil’s advocate, a semi-automatic firearm will shoot as fast as the wielder can pull it’s trigger, and generally speaking, semi-automatic fire is more “deadly” then automatic fire, as it allows the shooter to be more accurate. So, it really makes no difference. Handgun shooting provides a different set of challenges from rifle shooting, it is also an accepted olympic sport. Their guns just don’t look as scary.
