Tennis Point Lose a point for groaning/shrieking in tennis?
I heard it on the news. They showed Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova playing each other while they were talking about it. Haha.
Apparently they might be like taking a point off for groaning too loudly or something?
Is it true?
'Cause I sure hope so.
I sure hope so... it's gotten worse and worse through the years, and the coach in Florida (Nick Bollettieri) seems to teach it as a weapon to throw opponents off their game - ridiculous tactic (he has been accused of this, never been confirmed though). Enough is enough... letting out a grunt is fine, as it does help to release when striking the ball and allow you to use more energy... but, these girls are screaming at the top of their lungs - not necessary at all - especially when the screaming seems to drop a few decibels when they are ahead in the match...thus proving that they do it to intimidate and/or throw off their opponent.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A rally in tennis is a sequence of shots within a point. A rally starts with serve and return of the serve, and a sequence of shots until the point is won by one of the players. Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racquet that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponents court. The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century as lawn tennis which has heavy connections to various field/lawn games as well as to the ancient game of real tennis. After its creation, tennis spread throughout the upperclass Englishspeaking population before spreading around the world. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A tennis match is composed of points, games, and sets. A match is won as soon as a player or doubles pair wins the majority of prescribed sets, or reaches the prescribed total points in a tiebreak (usually extended if the total is reached without a twopoint advantage). Traditionally, a match is the best of three sets (or five for men in a toplevel tournament such as a Grand Slam, Davis Cup, or secondtier final). Doubles matches now commonly consist of two sets and, if required, a Match Tiebreak to ten points (or more as required to win by a twopoint margin). Tennis scoring rests on the premise that serving is advantageous over receiving, hence it is only possible to win a set or match by breaking (winning) the opponents service game at least once, before a tiebreak is required. Likewise, it is not possible to win a tiebreak without winning at least one point during an opponents turn at serve (called a minibreak). Withh John Officer, US Naval Academy Head Tennis Coach This video breaks down the game of tennis into five areas. The categories include defense, rally, dictate, transition, and finishing zone. The DVD explores the correct percentage play from each area. Additionally, the serve, return, passing shots, and counter-attacking shots are included as separate areas bringing the total to nine. There is a tendency for teaching professionals to teach how to stroke the ball but not where to place it. It is crucial that players understand how to set up a point, counter-attack, as well as how to finish. 44 minutes. 2004.
