TENNIS HELP (please)! About my grip...

PLEASE HELP: Background: So I've been playing for semi-regularly for roughly a year now, and I'm about a 3.0 to a 3.5 (better than 3.0s I meet, but I lose to some 3.5s). I learned a forehand using the Eastern grip, and I like it. Particularly, I like hitting flat and I love that low balls are easy to drive through for a solid shot. I know it's less consistent, but I love hitting aggressive flat shots. However, in an effort to be more consistent and versatile, I've been trying a semi-western grip for more topspin and angles (I also like the open stance better) and it's good, but I miss putting the balls away with flatter shots. So here's my question (finally). Should I (and do other people) use both in a match? I was playing this morning and I would switch between the two. Is this normal? Is it okay? Do other people do this?

Absolutely its normal to switch form eastern to semi western. Just like its normal to use different grips for forehand and backhand shots.
the key is what ever makes you comfortable. If your nervous about hitting low balls with the semi western grip chances are your going to miss the shot. What you need to do is practice switching your grip during a match, so the transition is smooth and comfortable.

Tennis Forehand Groundstroke - Spacing

Table Tennis Strokes

There are some moves that must be mastered so that you can play table tennis as an expert. Listed below are several that you would do well to practice until you have mastered.

The block PLAN

The first coup, you must learn to defend the east bloc shooting, which is implemented by your racket held at a right angle to the meeting table and the ball just after it landed on the side of the net. This photo is very easy to master once you've learned to take the racket and time correctly the ball well enough to beat you more or less at the centre of the racket face.

Although experts players use a lot of spin on almost every shot, and make readers and chops with ease, you want to learn the bloc fired first because it is the easiest and easiest way to return the ball.

If it was not possible for the opponent to make a lot of spin on a ball of light, we would probably use this picture only. However, it is extremely difficult to adjust the angle of the racket face fairly quickly made plans to return with sidespin, under spin, or more than spin.

TECHNIQUE FOR THE BLOCK PLAN

The block is shot mostly on the underside, with the right foot to left front and right side of his body turned slightly toward the net. Left-handed players, of course, reverse these directions. Bend your arm at the elbow and wrist keep your business. Stand near the table, keep the blade of the racket horizontal and block the ball with a quick movement just after it bounced on the table. (Note: In table tennis it is against the rules of volleyball, that is to hit the ball before it has rebounded.)

THE CHOP

To save time and security in return difficult shots, players learn to withdraw behind the table and use a chopping motion to keep the ball in play A forehand or a backhand chop is made from the racket up around your shoulder, and chop the front and rear of the ball to a forty-five degrees. Not only this time returning the ball, but he keeps a low return and apply enough backspin to force your opponent to hit his return into the net, unless he adjusts his racket to allow your spin.

Forehand and backhand DRIVES

Like the chop is the weapon of defence in table tennis, so that the preliminary hand and backhand drives are attacking weapons. To make a hard turn slightly in both directions; tilt your racket face forward, bring your racket on the ball, then up and slightly above with a movement of brushing, finishing with the racket and above your head. This movement gives strong topspin the ball which makes pull-down menu on the other side of the net.

The primary objective of the reader, as an attack stroke, is to win the point by the speed or placement. It is often necessary to take a chance to miss the ball when you try to play offensively. Of course, if you take too many chances that you will eventually be foolish too many mistakes and losing the game.

SERVE

Service table tennis must be done by bouncing the ball on your own side of the table first. There are many restrictions imposed on service providers, which are typically prevent service to be an offensive weapon. Any run-up to the service must be given by the racket and not by hand. Take care vary the length and speed of your service so that your opponent will not be able to return aggressive.

It is, of course, the more you can learn more about the sport of table tennis, but once you've learned these plans, you made a good start!

  • The grunt seems to me to be a result of increasing intra-abdominal pressure (ie, the Valsalva maneuver) in preparation for a sudden, precise, powerful movement. Increasing IAP provides stability, and the release of pressure comes out as a grunt. A tennis forehand might not look very powerful, but I’d be there’s quite a bit of torque that needs to be counteracted. Of course, I’m sure some people do it because it sounds cool. And I hate to be that guy, but > This has been tested by showing volunteers videos of tennis players whacking balls to either side of the court, with and without grunts. The volunteers used a keyboard to indicate as quickly as they could which way they thought the ball was going. The results show that with a grunt it takes you longer to figure out where the ball is going, and you are more likely to guess incorrectly. correlation != causation. You might be more likely to grunt on a particularly difficult shot, as the difficulty requires more stability/power. It’s also probably harder for a bystander to predict the outcome of a difficult shot.

Hope this helps! Thx for the extra info on the windshield wiper…… I'm assuming you have a semi-western or western grip if you are following through like a windshield wiper. With that being said you should NOT be stepping in with your left foot(assuming you're right handed) to strike the ball unless it's a short ball then your body will naturally turn and your left foot will step forward when striking the ball (Neutral or Closed stance). With the grip and follow through you use you need to be hitting a "open stance forehand" …..load your weight on your right foot and explode your weight to your left foot. Watch this video to have a better understanding about the 3 different type of stances. ….. Also, with your grip and follow through it's hard to hit a flat forehand….a windshield wiper forehand is used to brush the ball and add topspin to your shot…….. Use an Open Stance Forehand and just have fun!
