Hi. This is going to be long. This is going to sound really passionate, too; that’s because I love this subreddit. I invest a lot of time in it, look forward to it, and call many of the people I have met here “friends”. Therefore, this is going to sound like it’s directed at you. It’s not. You have just created an outlet. OK? We needed to separate the complaints best we can. We needed a means to still allow people to bitch instead of just deleting their posts. Kickme444 has created (and encouraged participation in) an ENTIRE subreddit whose sole purpose is to generally spread bad publicity about one of his greatest contributions to reddit and most loved projects. He’s not saying “fuck you” to his secret santas. He’s giving secret santas a chance to say “fuck you” to him. And that’s the thing, you see. A whole heap of the blame always ends up falling on the moderator’s shoulders. We do our best to implement a series of checks and balances to keep the trolls out. We do not have a way to detect losers via a username. We can’t predict family emergencies or natural disasters that may distract your gifter from sending out a gift. We can’t check each and every mailing label for inaccuracies to prevent postal workers from shuffling your gift from post office to post office. Each and every one of you accepts, when signing up, that you may get a paperclip. Or a duffel bag full of cash. It’s a complete wild card, and unfortunately we’ve had a lot more paperclips than we have had duffel bags. I have seen people chastise a complainer for not receiving a gift—”it’s about the GIVING”—then turn around and flip their shit when, a few days later, they too are empty-handed. Accusations start to crop up that it’s the “newbies”, it’s the people with low karma, it’s the lurkers. This exchange it’ll probably be “The Diggers”. The four of us have told you guys time and time again that we have seen NO CORRELATION between “account status” and likelihood of shipping a gift. Even secret santa veterans have shafted people. People who heroically agree to send a gift to someone who was shafted in a rematch thread have, and will, end up sending nada. All it takes is that ONE shitty gift for the hysteria to start. Someone posts a ripped up pog and then people who are still waiting for a gift automatically assume that they’ve been shafted….they make posts—they barrage the mods. Others who receive a gift around OUR RECOMMENDED guideline of $15 suddenly decide that, after seeing the souped-up laptop their peer got, maybe their gift wasn’t so hot and maybe a post should be made encouraging proper “stalking” of their giftee (since they definitely made a post last week about how they busted their iPhone and hey, it’s the THOUGHT that counts, and wouldn’t that be thoughtful?!) It sucks. It sucks because a LOT of these posts jump the gun, and because there are a LOT, it puts a downer on the entire subreddit. This sucks for those reading the subreddit because people start to get paranoid. It sucks for people visiting because it makes our wonderful and generous community look pissy and depressed. It sucks for the mods because HELL we just spent HOURS going through orangereds and answering the same five questions over and over and they were all angry and accusatory and why are we agreeing to do this again in six months? So we’re moving it elsewhere. Your voices will still be heard. Your peers will be there, too; to commiserate and to cheer you up, and to just gawk—schadenfreude can be addictive. We’ll be there, too. For the same reasons but also (and more importantly), to keep an eye on one of our biggest issues of this whole thing and to help solve problems when we can…”troll investigations” and other such mod-erly stuff. I’m sorry if this seems like shaming, or if this sounds like we’re angry at the people who are shafted. We are not. Some of my favorite people from this subreddit are people who were shafted—because they turn the other cheek and look forward to our next exchange. It’s very admirable, as most people would say “fuck you” and not return. As for the name, “Scrooges”… It’s Christmas-sy. It’s also just a name. It could be worse. We’re still dealing with fallout from people being upset over the connotations of “SS” as our “Secret Santa” shorthand. Don’t put too much thought into it.
