String Reel Black Anybody familiar with Lawrence fishing reels?
I posted a question a good while ago about some fairly old lures that were passed down to me from my Great Uncle, who passed away last year. I also just came across a reel that he had, which is a Lawrence. It's a very old reel to say the least. It's a baitcasting style reel, black, and actually still has nylon type fishing string spooled on it.
It's amazing to look at equipment like this and see just how far fishing technology has come. There's absolutely no drag system equipped on it. It would be an awfully awkward reel to use now. I don't have a clue as to what gear ratio it is, but the crank is absolutely tiny on the thing.
I may post a picture for the heck of it and see if anybody may have the same one by chance or one similar.
Josh, I don't know about Lawrence specifically but if you look up the company on a internet search and get a phone number for that company they might but it from you for there fishing museum. I do know the type though you have to hold the spool with your thumb with light presser when casting to prevent backlash and more pressure wile repositioning or waiting for a hit. Is it made of all brass with a bone or Ivory crank? How old do you think it is? I have seen some old brass reels go for $200. at a flee market. Be care full not to get taken if you sell it. Do your research!!!!!!!!!

Rated: NASynopsis: An entertaining and provocative look at Hollywood's depiction of Native Americans, Reel Injun journeys through a century of cinema to set the record straight. Traveling through the heartland of the U.S., to the Black Hills and Monument Valley, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond examines how the myth of the movie ''Injun'' has influenced the world's understanding - and misunderstanding - of Natives. With clips from hundreds of classic and recent films, it is a remarkable feat of historical research, documenting the shift from nuanced silent-era heroes to the Western's ''Noble savage'' stereotype, leading up to the bourgeoning Native independent scene of Smoke Signals and The Fast Runner. Containing candid interviews with celebrated directors, writers, actors and activists, including Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby), Robbie Robertson (The Last Waltz), Sacheen Littlefeather, John Trudell, and Russell Means, Reel Injun is an insightful and essential compendium for understanding the racial politics of Hollywood and the continuing artistic vibrancy of Native peoples.

The spool on my Abu Garcia Black Max doesn't spin when I crank the handle. Haven't strung it yet, is it okay?
I just bought an Abu Garcia Black Max baitcasting reel today. The package didn't show any signs of crushing or tampering, however when I removed it from the packaging and put it on my rod to prepare to string it, I cranked the handle a couple of times and realized that my spool doesn't spin when I crank the handle. I can turn it freely by hand and it turns smooth and fast. It will occasionally spin when I crank the handle. I haven't strung it yet, should I take it back and exchange it? Or is this a condition that will resolve itself when I string the reel? Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I don't mean to sound ignorant, but this is the first baitcasting reel I've ever owned. I ususally use spinning reels.
Do not worry. This is perfectly normal. Some reels leave the factory with no drag tension. Simply tighten the drag and you will make the spool spin again. Just remember to loosen the drag after every use; this is the proper way to treat any reel that has a drag.
PS: Flipping switch will only make the thumb button (for disengaging the spool) jump back up automatically when you released your thumb.
