Prince Ozone Tour mp vs. Ignite Team? HELP!!?
Hi, I am a varsity player in my high school and I currently use Speedport Black. I found too much power on the SPB and trouble controlling, but I like the feel of the stick. Can anyone have a suggestion of which one I should get? between the Ozone tour ad the Ignite Team? Thanks.
I'm gonna answer both your recent questions in this one...
First off, if the SP Black is giving you control issues, the Ignite Team is out of the question. If you want to stick with Prince frames, I would suggest trying the Ignite 95 or the Rebel 95 (non-Team versions), and the Ozone Tour is also worth a demo with these. Don't be scared off by the seemingly high static weight of the Rebel and Ignite. The swingweight is the measure to look at to know how heavy the frame will really feel to use. Even though they have considerably higher static weight, the swingweights of the non-Team Ignite and Rebel are nearly the same as the sw of the Ignite Team. So they won't feel much heavier to use.
I can just about guarantee that with the Ignite or Rebel, you won't have any issues with control. In fact, you might end up having problems with creating enough power. This isn't entirely a bad thing. Just means those frames would force you to learn to create more power on your own. The Ozone Tour will give you a little more help with power than the other two. But as always, this will come at a sacrifice of control.
You really do need to demo before you buy though. Especially as a varsity-level player. The frame you use will make more of a difference than it would for an average recreational player. You can demo all three of these frames from tenniswarehouse.com if you live in the continental US. They have a great demo program, you just pay shipping. And it's definitely worth the little extra cost to make sure you're buying a frame you'll be happy with.

I just demoed the Speedport black team and it is definitely my next racquet. I play at about a 5.0 level, so it took a little bit of pride swallowing to admit I liked this racquet so much, since I ought to be playing with more of a “player's frame,” as they say, one that is heavier, forces you to generate more power, but gives more control, too. I guess I just have a longer, slower swing than most guys at the 5.0 level.
Once I got over that I really began to love this racquet. I serve and volley a lot, and play doubles a whole lot, too, and you're spot on with the maneuverability, it's great when at the net. I also like the customizable inserts (I'm going to go with light blue, as it's close enough to the Tar Heel blue of my alma mater.)
I'm also struggling with which strings to use, have you had any luck since publishing this post? I usually play 17 gauge, too, at about 61 lbs, but might up the tension to help offset the lost control. Though, like you said I'll probably go thru strings pretty quickly in Texas with 17 gauge and a higher tension.
Enjoy your racquet, I know I will.
