How can good (professional) tennis players hit top spins so hard without the ball going long? Does it come with practice? Or am I hitting them in some wrong way. Is it because I use cheap $20 Wilson racquet, is better recquet will improve topspins. I've been playing for more than 5 years now, but still everytime I want to do a super fast top spins, lots of times it goes long just a little. I watched lots of professional games on tv and youtube and they almost never have this problem and they hit their topspins very hard. Am I doing something wrong? How can I improve on my topspins so the balls doesn't go too long.
The ball stays in -because- of the amount of topspin they are generating. If they hit just as hard, but put no spin on the ball, it would go long every single time they hit it.
I'd have to see you play to be able to tell you exactly what's wrong, but here's some common ones.
Too much wrist. Using your wrist to create topspin is not a good idea. First and foremost, because that's a very quick way to injure your wrist. Also because it's not near as effective at putting controllable spin on the ball as with proper form.
Letting your head lift when you swing. Part of proper form is keeping your head still when hitting. If you pull your head up mid swing, you are likely to hit long.
Bad weight transfer. If you are lifting up your front foot when you hit (hitting and leaning backwards all at once), it does the same thing as lifting your head. You lift your entire body, and end up hitting the ball long. Make sure you get your weight properly shifted through the ball when you hit.
Getting over excited. When you get the chance to completely rip into a shot and go for the kill, oftentimes you will get too excited about the shot. You lose concentration on what you're doing, and and up not hitting the way you're supposed to hit. Don't overhit the ball. Give it just as much as it needs to get the job done.
You would benefit greatly from getting a private instructor. Even if it's just a short-term thing; you could take a few lessons until you've learned how to hit topspin and then stop. But if you can afford it, I highly recommend sticking with the lessons.
