According to legend, the method of Dutching is attributed to Dutch Schultz who is believed to have applied the technique at the track in a number of rackets in the 1920's and 30's. True or not, the method should be part of every bettor's arsenal as it allows him or her to back multiple horses in a race to varying amounts (based on the odds), while returning a predetermined amount should one of them win. As the old adage goes, no horse can go as fast as the money you bet on it, so improve your chances by betting a few.
Dutching works best when the backer has reduced the field down to a handful of likely candidates, usually with prices at odds against (large handicaps are a good source for potential races). There are many methods to use when calculating the stake based on a desired return or profit, but the most commonly used form of dutching works like so:
Return divided by the decimal price. (Divide the first figure by the second and add on 1 if converting UK odds e.g. 5/1 = 6.00).
For example, if we have reduced the field down to three likely fancies at 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1 and we are looking to return £50.00, our stakes would be £16.67 (£50 divided by 3), £12.50 (£50 divided by 4) and £10.00 (£50 divided by 5) respectively. So if we are lucky enough to have one of our three selections win, we return £50.00 for an outlay of £39.17; a profit of £10.83.
Effectively what we are doing is creating our own book, similar to the bookmaker. In the given example, we have created a 78.33% book as our three selections have the implied probability of 33.33%, 25% and 20%. It goes without saying that dutching is easier to put to use in an online context due to the calculations involved and odd stake amounts, however every backer should be aware of the method and put it to use in his war with the bookmaker.
