Is Lidstrom the best defenceman to ever play the game?

The debate most likely is between a handful of players: Orr, Harvey, Robinson, Potvin, Coffey, Bourque, Lidstrom, Niedermayer. I realize that Orr revolutionized the game by racking up points as a defenceman and winning 8 Norris Trophies. However, I want you to take away all the things that make the generational gap of judging players dissappear. Forget the Stanley Cups, the points, and the trophies because they were won/scored in different eras. Who would you want to contain the other teams best forwards? Who do you want on the point taking a critical shot in the game? Who would you draft #1 overall if these players were available?

I'd prefer answers from people who've been around long enough to have actually seen all of these players play.

I am old enough to have seen them all and I personally think Lidstrom is right up there with the very best but nobody compares to Orr. Because he revolutionized the offensive role of the defenseman he is often overlooked for how great he was at his own end of the ice. Orr was a cut above at every aspect of the game and other than Gretzky I have to say he is the best player I've ever had the pleasure of seeing play. You couldnt help but notice every shift and the way teams played when he was on the ice. All the guys you mention belong near the top along with guys like Stevens and Red Kelly and Lidstrom is so often overlooked because he is very quietly effective but he easily belongs among the best I've ever seen.

But to answer your question on who I draft #1 overall....not even a split second to answer Bobby Orr, to have seen him play would erase any doubts and make no mistake....he was every bit as elite in front of his goalie as he was at the other end of the ice (if he never scored a goal many would still talk about how good a defensive defenseman he was but the scoring made many forget how good a defenseman he was).

Yzerman vs Sakic?

Who's the better BC-born player? Both can rack up the points. Both are/were long-serving captains of their team. Both won multiple Stanley Cups (Yzerman 3, Sakic 2). Both won a Conn Smythe. Sakic won a Hart. I think Yzerman is the #4 or 5 scorer of all time, and Sakic is currently #10, but still going strong.

It's a tough question since they both have fairly similar career stats, as far as points per game goes, but Sakic was never quite the 2 way player Yzerman was.

Sakic did win the Hart Trophy in 2001 and Yzerman never managed to win it mostly due to having to play his best years along with Lemiuex and Gretzky. Yzerman scored 155 points in his best season compared to only 120 in Sakic's best year. Yzermans 3 most productive years were better than Sakics best year. Sakic scored 50 goals or more in a season only 2 times while Yzerman did it 5 times.

I think that had Yzerman not had such limiting injuries later in his career we would have seen a longer even more productive late career numbers. Sakic has had his share of injuries but never the severity of those that Yzerman.

So as you can see I'm certainly making more of a case for Yzerman, while I have great respect for what Joe has done in his career the vote goes to The Captain...Stevie Y!

Although Mike (Avs Fan) makes the point that Yzerman never won a Hart Trophy, Sakic had the Luxury of not having to play the High point of his career during the same time as Wayne and Mario. The Year Yzerman scored 155 points he was the Pearson Award winner (Players MVP) but in that year both Wayne and Mario had more points than Yzerman. Lemieux had 199 points that year and the Players still voted Yzerman the winner of the Lester B Pearson Award. Sakic never had the competition for the Hart that Yzerman had or he would most likely won a couple. ONLY Lemieux and Gretzky have EVER scored more points in a single season the Yzerman. He also had the additional Luxury of having a better all around team with him in his glory days while Yzermans best days were behind him by the time he had the teams that ran for the cup.
