What equipment should I use, as an advancing tennis player?
I am a 15-year old junior in high school.
I started tennis rather late (summer before I started high school)
I want to play in college and I'm improving quickly but now im at the point where im checking if my equipment is good.
I use a prince Speedport black racket and I am an extremely agressive player who relies on power and speed. Should I get a different racket? If so, what kind? What kind of strings should I use? Should I use lead tape? What is the Point of lead tape?
Please help me!
As far as the racquet is concerned, the choice is up to you. It is a fine racquet for intermediate and advanced players both. So it should work fine for you as you improve in the next couple years. But it never hurts to check what's out on the market every now and then, to see if there's something you like better. So if you want to, you can demo a few different frames. If none of them make you go 'wow', then stick with your SP Black. If there's one that you just love, and the difference between how you play/feel with it justifies the cost of the frame, then go for it.
If you decide to do something like this, the logical step up would be to something a little smaller and heavier. Definitely don't go much lighter than your current frame. Smaller and heavier usually means more control, but will require that you can create more power on your own.
Now, on to the strings. They make a big difference, but also kinda don't matter that much (let me explain). You will notice a difference in ease of spin production, feel, comfort, and possibly even power, if you use a different string. But I say it doesn't matter that much, because you can do just as well without shelling out lots of money for expensive strings or hybrid combos. My string of choice is the Prince Synthetic gut with duraflex. Not by any means a fancy string, it's actually one of the cheaper strings on the market. I break strings very quickly, and find that the syn gut w/duraflex lasts a little longer than other syn. gut strings. Also has slightly better feel.
In your case, I would probably just stick with a synthetic gut string such as that one for now. It'll work well enough for you, and you'll save a little money that way. If you aren't going through strings very fast, you might consider a softer string with a little more feel.
Oh. And don't worry about lead tape yet. It's just for customizing the weight and balance of your frames. Just don't bother with it at this time.
