Practice Balls Case

setting help?
Im going into high school as a freshman this fall and volleyball tryouts are in two weeks. I play outside hitter and thats what i played both years in middle school. But lately i've been told by many people even coaches that because of my height I would probably be put at setter. In case I do get put at setter what are some good things to practice on my own to help me practice getting the ball to the target. O and also when i set the ball is there supposed to be a spin.
I would recommend going to a local community gym and playing as a setter in some pickup games.
If you have been into your position as a hitter, the first thing you realize is that when someone from the back row passed the ball, you would be trying to stay ##away## from the ball (getting ready to hit), which was what I did after being the middle blocker/hitter for most of my "career".
I learned to become a setter by moving **toward** the ball after the pass. No matter where the ball goes, as long as it is high enough, I will go set it. We never had front row setter going to the back corner when I played in high school, rarely did it in college, but I am doing it now for fun. When playing pickup game in gyms at beginning to mid level with "middle set", you will see lots of players running for the ball without calling "help".
I would call "help" if the pass was not high enough, as soon as I realize it.
For daily practice "on your own", you need to focus more on your wrist. A Japanese trainer in the 80's would ask his setter to fill up beer bottles with water and grab one with each hand, so that the setter can "spin" move his wrist with more "weight".
You should find a court and practice setting from different spot into hitter's position... **consistently** (as a hitter you should already got to know where they want you to put the ball). When setting, try sending power/strength from your legs to arms and wrists, not simply from wrists. Set the ball when it is on top of your forehead, when you look up, so that the opponent won't know whether you are going to set forward or backward until the ball leaves your fingers. Make sure you "look" the same in stance whether doing forward set or back set. You may also put your back against the net and do "side-set".
When setting the ball, you definitely do NOT want any spin, but don't worry if you cannot stop the ball from spinning. It would take some time, but ultimately the ball from a setter should be free from spin, and could look like "staying" in the air, which helps the hitter to consistently find her/his hitting spot.
Hope this helps,
Dan
