Are wedding favors a waste of money?

A little baggie of anise mints or m&m's? A pack of personalized playing cards? Teeny frames with bride and groom's name on it with the date they were married? I mean really, does anyone really miss these at a wedding? I see so many land in the table busser's dish tub untouched. The amount of time and expense on these "favors" doesn't seem much like a favor at all. Why does anyone keep doing this?

A LOT of stuff at weddings is a waste of money, but favors seem particularly wasteful--but they 've become part of the tradition. Why do people keep doing this? One reason is the wedding industry has brides convinced they must have this, even though most people just throw the useless crap out as soon as they get home. Edit: They convince you that you need favors because they want to sell you favors. Most things in life come down to money, one way or another.
What I've noticed is some people make a contribution to a charity, and they simply place a card on the tables informing the guests of this gift. That seems more useful and positive, and what guest is going to say, "Never mind helping kids with cancer; I want my bag of M&M's and a frame too small to hold a decent picture." No. Even if they think it, they'd never say it. Seems like a good solution to me,
Edit: Iiidon't know, I agree with you. Weddings have gotten totally out of hand. My whole wedding in 1981, and it was nice, catered, with a band, the whole thing, and yes, I had favors (small champagne bottles), cost less than what most of these girls are spending on just the wedding gown now. And, over 27 years later, I'm still married to the same man.
The marriage is the important thing, not putting on a one-day extravaganza. Given the divorce rate, the size and opulance of the wedding doesn't seem to guarantee a long marriage.
