how to get a new key for my lost one mustang 1996?
5 locksmiths said they cant or dont have the key
my car was stolen 2 months ago and i had to get a steering colum from a 99 mustang since they busted out the ignition cylinder. it worked and i lost the key while partying in lake havasu. the new key looked like the 96 key and it wasnt oversized with a computer chip in it that i knew of. i made copies of my old ignition at home depot and they worked. i have the vin # for both the old and new ignition. will the dealer be able to make me a copy? one dealer said anything 97' and older they can since they keep those records on file. can anyone help me in my situation? thanks
I will apologize for the service you have been given so far by locksmiths. Not all are knowledgeable about automobiles but they should have a at least directed you to someone who could help.
You have a couple of options.
The VIN # you have for the '99 column should be on record at Ford since it was a transponder. Since it was placed in a '96 model the transponder is no longer a factor.
If Ford does not have the code then your only alternative is to have a trained proffessional break over the ignition lock, remove it and replace the lock. (KEEP THE CODE that comes with the new igniton lock.) Do not let anyone try this without proper training as you might be headed back to the salvage yard for another column. Now as far as the key for your door, take the car to a real locksmith that does autos (save yourself a service call) and they can make one for you (that is once you have the ignition thing worked out).
