Lavender Large

planting a lavender plant?

My dad gave me a lavender plant which is in a small pot and the roots are coming through the bottom. I was going to plant it however the weather is getting into the high 30's again this week so...
Am i better off re-potting it into a larger pot or should it be ok if i plant it?
I would be watering it often and could place shade cloth over it if this will help.

There is a commercial lavender farm in northern Michigan called Leelanau Lavender Breezes. They have a website that should explain all your issues and concerns about growing lavender plants in northern climates.

Several key items
- Plants must be put in sandy soil. Lavender plants do not like their feet to be wet (so heavy loam soil will rot the roots).
- Plants need protection from the cold - either straw or snow cover
- Lavender plants need extra water during the first two to three years, then they should be good even in overly dries summers.
- Plants that are cared for should last 10 to 15 years, however, some can go well beyond that.
