I always thought highly of him as a player. He had a huge serve and a blistering forehand. Personality-wise, he could be something of a smart a**, but then again, so were a lot of the other players of his time.
I also regarded Lendl highly because he was the first men's player to stress the importance of diet and fitness, and he put his money where his mouth was in that respect. In his prime, he was extremely fit. Lendl is also generally given credit for being the "father" of modern power tennis. It was a real treat to watch him play.
He won the Australian Open twice, the French three times, and the US Open three times. I was always sorry that he never won Wimbledon.

Many online sportsbooks are streaming Rafael Nadal v Tomas Berdych live on 04 December 2009 from 15:00 GMT.
Rafael Nadal will open Spain’s defense of their 2008 Davis Cup title when the finals begin Friday in Barcelona. Nadal’s foe from the Czech Republic will be Tomas Berdych.
“Everybody talk about hard week last week,” Nadal said. “But (it) wasn’t a big surprise. I didn’t arrive with the best confidence… on difficult surface, against the best players of the world. So here I practiced hard and well during all the week. I am happy to be here and be part of this very good team. We practiced all the time… trying our best in every practice. And I think and I hope to be ready for tomorrow.”
Nadal leads the head-to-head 5-3 with four consecutive straight set wins (nine sets total) over the big-hitting birdman the last three years. But I give Berdych a shot to at least steal a set.
Nadal comes into the tie riding a four-match losing skid, his worst since he came into prominence. And even though the match in his backyard and on the clay (indoors), he has to be feeling a little uneasy given his play the last month.
And I think Berdych and rest of the Czech team can play pretty loose knowing few give them a chance this weekend. So Tomas should be hitting bombs and swinging freely.
In the second match Spanish coach Alberto Costa has chosen David Ferrer over Fernando Verdasco to face Radek Stepanek. I know Verdasco also been struggling like Nadal but I think he deserves the spot over Ferrer here. Verdasco’s had a great year – remember he won it for Spain last year! – and even though he zeroed at the WTFs last week he competed well and based on his season and his level of play, I think he should on that court tomorrow, not David.
“Fernando is fit and he has an important role to play in the doubles and possibly Sunday,” Costa said. “But David has prepared really well and he deserves to play.”
But Ferrer should still be able to get the job done against The Worm. And if he does a rested Verdasco and his buddy Feliciano Lopez could clinch it for the Spaniards on Saturday in the doubles against Lukus Dlouhy and Jan Hajek, though watch for Berdych-Stepanek to fill in if needed.
If the tie is still alive – which I think it won’t – the Sunday reverse singles set up with Nadal v. Stepanek followed by Ferrer and Berdych.
The favorite Spaniards have won three Davis Cups, all this decade in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Spain’s also won 19 straight clay ties since a 1999 loss to Brazil, and they’ve won 17 straight at home. The odds don’t look good for team Czech which, led by Ivan Lendl, won their lone DC in 1980.

Oy, Wuiches, Wuiches, Wuiches.
The point about Berdman not being a champion yet is understood, but, talking about his ONE final and Fed's many finals are two totally different things.
I'm not saying this because I'm a Fed fan, but making it to the semi-finals and finals is, of course, significant. At a major, it means you've won at least 5 matches, obviously not an easy feat. To do that consistently is very impressive, regardless of what you end up doing thereafter.
Wuiches, I'm afraid your “For Fed standards only titles work” idea actually misses the whole essence of sport, which is doing your best to try to win, not winning in itself. Though I'm sure he's very disappointed whenever he loses, Fed understands this point I think. A guy who puts himself into the semis and finals is always giving himself a chance at a title – if fortunate, some he will get, but of course some he won't, especially as he ages.
I once heard of a tennis coach who had his players throw out all their runner-up trophies. To me that is actually a very disgusting thing to do. The ultimate example of why in my opinion is Ivan Lendl, a player I hated by the way. But I respect him. Do you know what I respect him for the most? NO YOU DON'T!!!!!
Look at Lendl's record at Wimbledon. How many titles does he have there? A BIG FAT ZERO, that's what he has! BUT, the freaking guy tried his heart out, despite his limitations on grass, and battled his way to two finals and a few tough semifinals too. He gave it his all, but always came up short against better grass court tennis players. And yet, to me, he should be prouder of what he did at Wimbledon than what he did at any of the other Majors because the real strength in his character showed in his effort to go the distance on a surface that was the least suited for his game.
So Wuiches, in my humble opinion, you have the choice of being two types of people:
1. A member of the “masses” out there, like the neanderthal tennis coach above, who would look at Lendl never winning Wimbledon and draw the conclusion that this was nothing but a huge failure; or
2. A guy who thinks outside the box a little who would look a little further into the context of the big BAGEL beside Lendl's name at Wimbledon and understand that what he did there truly deserves our respect.
