What racket adjustments should I use to improve my net play?

I play college club tennis and consider myself a decent player (though below d-III varsity level). I don't hit with much power, so I usually win points by coming in to net (I serve an volley on my own serve). However, I feel like I miss a lot of volleys that I should be making. While obviously some of it could be mechanical, I wonder if there is anything I can do from an equipment standpoint to improve my volleys.

I've been using Head Liquidmetal 2 strung at 57 (the median value for the racket) for around 7 years. I'm open to a new racket, but as far as my current racket, could I add lead tape or something in a way that would help?

The prevailing school of thought is that you don't want to shift the balance to the head if you want to be able to make quick volleys. So, there are two things that you can do - up the tension to 60 lbs to increase control and, to further this effect, put lead tape underneath the grip wrap. This will add weight to the racket and make it more stable against these off-center shots that fly out now. But - beware - there are natural trade-offs: less power (tension) and a heavier racket to get used to.

But, weight is a sweet thing - it will also add stability for the ground strokes and your serve will be "heavier" as well. That's why the pros play with relatively (by today's standards) sticks.

Try a few things - you will get an idea what works and what does not.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A tape head is a type of transducer used in tape recorders to convert electrical signals to magnetic fluctuations and vice versa. The electromagnetic arrangement of a tape head is generally similar for all types, though the physical design varies considerably depending on the application for example video recorders use rotating heads which implement a helical scan, whereas most audio recorders have fixed heads. A head consists of a core of magnetic material arranged into a doughnut shape or toroid, into which a very narrow gap has been let (an air gap or other insulating material). This gap causes the magnetic flux to spill out of the material at that point, which is where the tape is made to run. The flux thus magnetises the tape at that point. A coil of wire wrapped around the core opposite the gap interfaces to the electrical side of the apparatus; thus either supplying a signal in the case of recording, or being fed to an amplifier in the case of playback.
