About ShanZhai Sneakers
ShanZhai, which is an adjective as well as a verb, becomes popular recently. It was used as verb in most cases before it appears as adjective. However, COPY is its father at that moment. Personally I can not but admire those who research and develop the ShanZhai Cell Phones. I’m not a professor or expert in high tech and science. It is indeed beyond my ability to let me copy cellphone. That’s why I’m so late to pay my attention to ShanZhai Cell Phones. Actually, before ShanZhai Cell Phone, what is of interest to me the most is ShanZhai Sneakers. You can find many synonymous words of ShanZhai, such as fake, factory variants, custom sneakers, knock-off, rip-off, etc.
Sneakers Production has been divorced from the traditional field of shoes market since the opening of last century and became a specific industry gradually. In the early days of sneakers development, those famous sneakers brand which still exist at the present were growing in balance, like the small countries during Spring and Autumn Period. Comparatively speaking, most of the big brand sneakers companies copied each others in design at that phase. And you can easily tell their similar parts now. Here some examples are given:
Converse put “Black Leather All Star†in market in 1948, which was designed to be different with other ordinary “All Starâ€. This model was made of full leather and the toe part color was made to be black other than the most classic Converse color white. However, as a matter of fact, Brooks had already introduced a similar model of basketball sneakers. Converse copied the design in the parts of shoe upper, as well as the stitching skills and 2-hole airy tech of inner side. What Converse did was just to change the sole color from black to white. Brooks, the brand specializing in running shoes in the current USA market, deserved the name of “Black Leather†obviously better than Converse.
In 1941 there were 2 models of basketball sneakers by a brand “Hood Athleticâ€. You would surprised to find that one of them came with the design concept of “shell†in the part of shoe toe, which was 28 years ahead of SuperStar widely advertised by Adidas. At the present we can not find out evidence to show whether the brand “hood athletic†still exist or not. Maybe that’s better to Adidas.
Head came up with a tennis sneakers design in 1964. Head still holds its market in the world and is focusing on tennis sports products now. Between Head Tennis Division in 1964 and Stan Smith under the brand Adidas, you can tell the differences on the shoe tongue and logo on shoe heel, but can not ignore their design on sole and upper which were almost 99% the same. Which is copied and which is ShanZhai? In the view of time, Stan Smith was one of the most classic products put into market by Adidas in 1971. While Stan Smith by Adidas became so popular finally that Puma and Nike followed its design concept and produced similar sneakers. Of course they made some adjustment on the shoe side holes. Up till now, You can still find Nike Tennis, HiroshiFujiwara’s favorite sneakers, have some undeniable relation with Stan Smith.
New Court, Forest Hill and Roscoe Tanner were the most unique models among the Tennis shoes promoted by Pony, USA in 1981. And New Court and Adidas ATP were all alike.
Classic Running Shoes, Relaint LX(not for Xiang Liu) was launched by Puma in 1987. This model is still being retroed Really it only proves Relaint LX can come through a time of testing. However, this pair of shoes is not alone. In the fact, you can find the original model as long as to change Puma logo to the Nike logo on shoes side of Pursuit, launched in 1986 by NIKE. In this case Nike won. Anyway Puma did something original and added hollow design to OUTSOLE to make it more confortable. It’s a pity it was found in the further investigation, Asics had launched similar designed sneakers in 1984, named Tiger’s Alliance. If it was legal for Nike to ShanZhai (copy) Tiger, Puma had basically gone too over in the case of ShanZhai.
There are too many such Shanzhai cases and the topic is just endless. What is our purpose to discuss it now?
Sneakers Science and Technology has developed and grown up rapidly since 1990s’. Most of the high technology applied into the sneakers available on the market are realized in the current time by lots of science experiments. It is pretty difficult to put a reasonable new high technology into realistic and create good economic profit. It is also because the rapid development and growth of sneakers industry, every brand starts to pay more attention to their logo and design. It’s just like new born babies. They grow up to be different gradually who were almost the same at the beginning.
All of the “ShanZhai†brands listed above have tens of years’ history. Even there still would be some sneakers of similar design concept now, like Tennis Classic of Nike and Stan Smith of Adidas, they are not just a pair of shoes but the culture of the brand accumulated all through the years.
So what is ShanZhai? Shanzhai, as they call it, is not what is copied or what is fake. It is a matter of timing—when it is copied. Here is my question, Four great inventions: the compass, gunpowder, paper and movable type printing, were ancient China's outstanding scientific and technological contributions to world civilization. Foreign countries benefited from them and applied them into different fields for thousands of years. How didn’t they think of paying patent fee to Chinese people? Answer: Because it was ShanZhaied in ancient time.
