Is todays tennis racquet technology mostly hype?
a few years back I had a Prince Hornet T.T. that I really liked, but I lost it. I'm wondering whether legit improvements have been made to racquets since then, or if I should just buy another Hornet and save $100. I'm asking this cuz I remember those Hyper Hammer Rollers racquets were being sold for like $400, and nowadays you can't even find em.
And if racquets are better, what is the best pick in the 100-200 dollar price range?
IT IS NOT HYPE!!! Some of the newer colors are amazing and make you play MUCH better. Just like racing stripes on your car makes it faster!.... kidding..sorta. Is the new technology hype?.... new technology this year verses last year? Probably hype in most cases. Over 5 years ago... Improvements have been made over SOME of the older rackets. Some not. The black Wilson Pro-staff Pete Sampras 'used'.... is a classic and the specs on the newest rackets are pretty much the same inspite of the 'newer' construction and or color.
The one thing newer technology has done for us is give us accurate 'specs' about each racket; weight, size, head size, length, balance, frame thickness, stifness, string pattern, etc.. and in theory if the specs match then the rackets will feel and play the same. With the exceptions being rackets with gimmicks or 'fancy features' / non-traditional designs.
If you liked the Hornet save the money and buy it. If you liked it and want a newer one that plays the same match the specs and demo it. > The hard part of a demo is that the strings make a huge difference. Any avid tennis player should keep carefull track of when, where, by who, the brand, the type, and the tension of each string job. If possible go to the same guy each time and if he is good (USRSA cert.?) he can help make recomendations according to your game description and your needs. Finding the right racket and right stringing is difficult and proof is in how wide a variety there is in the Pros... John McEnroe was known for very loose stringing maybe as low as 45 lbs (he had the absolute precision to hit the ball exactly in the 'sweet spot' to control where the ball went) Pete Sampras had everything done to his rackets to give him total control and no power because he had the power and technique. His strings were at about 75lbs, had a guy who went with him who strung his rackets EVERY match even if he hadn't hit with it. He wanted the rackets to play exactly the same every time he hit so he could make changes accordingly in his own game and not have to guess if it was the racket/strings or his game.
Many pro tour players rackets are custom; weight, grip shape, etc.... most are heavier (mens tour rackets are usually 13.5 oz to 15 oz and VERY stiff ... They are not forgiving rackets and even a good 4.5 player would not play well with one. Some are just painted to look like the store model but not even close.... talk about false advertising...

on my hyper hammer tennis racquet it says 6.3 is it referring to the weight in oz?
The number on the Wilson racquets refers to a stiffness index rating. Racquets in the range of 1-3 are stiff and powerful racquets designed for people with compact strokes. 4-5 are designed for a balance between power and control for players with medium swing length. 6 and higher are the racquets with a more flexible frame designed for control. These racquets are for players who use full and fast swing speeds.

Why does the description say killer cover, killer guitar work?
