Tuff $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Tuff (from the Italian tufo) is a type of rock consisting of consolidated volcanic ash ejected from vents during a volcanic eruption. Tuff is sometimes called tufa, particularly when used as construction material, although tufa also refers to a quite different rock. Rock that contains greater than 50 tuff is considered tuffaceous. The products of a volcanic eruption are volcanic gases, lava, steam, and tephra. Magma is blown apart when it interacts violently with volcanic gases and steam. Solid material produced and thrown into the air by such volcanic eruptions is called tephra, regardless of composition or fragment size. If the resulting pieces of ejecta are small enough, the material is called volcanic ash, defined as such particles less than 2 mm in diameter, sandsized or smaller. These particles are small, slaggy pieces of magma and rock that have been tossed into the air by outbursts of steam and other gases; magma may have been torn apart as it became vesicular by the expansion of the gases within it. Gamma Spectroscopy $65.33 Gamma spectroscopy involves the spectroscopy of radionuclides. While a Geiger counter determines only the count rate, a gamma spectrometer also determines the energy of gamma rays emitted by radioactive substances. Most radioactive sources produce gamma rays of various energies and intensities. When these emissions are collected and analyzed with a gamma spectroscopy system, a gamma energy spectrum can be produced. A detailed analysis of this spectrum is typically used to determine the identity and quantity of gamma emitters present in the source. The gamma spectrum is characteristic of the gammaemitting nuclides contained in the source, just as in optical spectroscopy, the optical spectrum is characteristic of the atoms and molecules contained in the probe. The equipment used in gamma spectroscopy includes an energysensitive radiation detector, a pulse sorter, and associated amplifiers and data readout devices. The most common detectors include sodium iodide scintillation counters and highpurity germanium detectors.
