Finding A Name For Your Online Business

When you start a business, the first important thing in terms of communication is the name.
You have the idea, you have a business plan, but you still need a good name, especially if  your business needs interaction with a lot of people/consumers. And this is even more important when your business operates in the online environment.

Because online territory is a very crowded and dynamic place you’ll need a powerful, easy to remember, relevant and original name. Now, you no longer compete in a local market, but you challenge the world! If you want to be successful on the Internet, you want nobody else to have your name. And this is very tough.

Of course, if you choose a name like Fovssccaosf, you will be original enough
But if you also wish to be relevant, then probably the process of finding the right name it will require a lot of RAM out of your brain.

There are two paths you may go, and before that you’ll have to ask yourself what is your positioning: do you want to build a brand or you just want to sell some stuff?

If you look at the most successful online businesses today you will find brands:
Google, Youtube, Yahoo, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter are all established names that ring a bell in the mind of everybody.

Imagine how those names would have sounded if their only purpose was to easily attract people onto their websites:
www.searchanythingseasy.com, www.watchanduploadmovies.com, www.shareyourphotos.com or www.microblogging.com

Of course, if you own a small business and you sell flowers for example, it is better to have a name like this and it certainly rankes better in Google searches. Or should I say in
www.searchanythingseasy.com searches ...

But if your goals are higher then you should find an original, “ownable” name.
And it doesn’t necessary have to mean something. Now, it is true that probably most of those big successful names originally meant something. It is easy to assume that the word “flicker” reminds of camera flashes, for example. Or how the noun “twitter” was an inspiration to the biggest microblogging site in the world. It is harder to imagine though what names like Corbis means for example. But it actually means something too according to Wikipedia:
"Corbis" is a Latin word meaning "wicker basket," which at the time referred to the company's emerging view of itself as a receptacle or storehouse for visual media.”
Ohh... I wonder why I didn’t get it from the start! It’s so obvious.... (doh)

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, it is nice to mean something, but it doesn’t have to be in your face. (except for Facebook, of course...)
Just pick up a list of words or names that you think are relevant for your business field and twist them, bend them, combine, burn, scratch them until something beautiful comes out.

Or use a little online tool called http://www.naming.net/. Speaking of big brands, right?
The names generated aren’t very imaginative, but it’s good starting point.

Another advice is, try to find a name that sounds good; that has a certain melodicity in it. Find some rhythm.
If you come up with a short name, then you don’t need many vowels (e.g. Flickr, Google, Twitter). On a contrary, if you have rather long names then it is better to have more vowels spread harmoniously across the word (e.g. Youtube, Facebook, MySpace). These are only recommandations based on the common sense. It has to sound natural in speaking.

Another thing is that those names sound like musical notes: UP-down, UP-down, UP-down. So... GOO-gle, FACE-book, YOU-tube, YA-hoo, FLI-kr, MYspace, etc.

After filling up the bucket list then go to sites like http://www.register.com/ to check if your domain is available. From my experience, I’d say it is still much better to go for a .com domain if you have global plans.
