What's the safest way to travel with a giant breed dog?

Hi! Our 10-week-old Saint Bernard is growing by the day. We're about to trade our Subaru for a mini-van, and I'm wondering how other folks tote their gentle giants around. If anyone knows where to find data relevant to how dogs have made out in accidents with different systems, I would appreciate it. I can't find any! I asked our vet and he said, "I just leave my dogs loose in the car, but that's probably not the best thing to do." LOL and DUH!

So, what do you use and why? Crate in the back? Barrier? Harness in the back seat? The only consideration I have is our dog's safety. Money/looks/possible cosmetic to damage to the vehicle don't matter are not concerns. We're leaning towards the barrier. If you like those, too, can you recommend a specific brand/model?

I would recommend a crate. They are a definite way of preventing accidents, whereas dog guards are easily pushed/pulled down and hece the dog can jump over the back seat and cause mayhem! Doggy seatbelt probably isn't an option for a fully grown St Bernard.

But make sure that the crate you purchase is sturdy enough that it will not collapse in on your dog in the case of a crash. It is also usefu lthat any travelling crate has more than one door so that if one exit is blocked in an accident, there is a nalternative way to get the dog out. Many crates for sale are only suitable for inside a home, are very flimsy and many have only one door.
