Why is the grass court season so short? And is there such a thing as an indoor grass or clay court?

Is the grass court season so brief because of the cost to upkeep the grass? I just don't understand it. Since grass is one of the surfaces in tennis, why is it so under-utilized? Everywhere you go, you'll see hard courts and carpets only.

Well, in part you answered your own question regarding the grass: It's extremely difficult to maintain. And given the fact that there are so few serve-and-volley players left in the game, a tennis club isn't going to invest that kind of time and expense when most players would prefer a hard or clay court, anyway.

So, the reason the grass court season is so brief is because there are so few tournaments that play on grass. (Plus the fact that the dates of the French Open and Wimbledon have traditionally been just a couple of weeks apart.)

Indoor clay courts do exist, but I'm not aware of any being used in a pro tournament. Indoor clay tends to be harder and slipperier, though, so most players would prefer an outdoor clay court:

An indoor grass court, I think, would be next to impossible. It would be far too difficult to create the ideal conditions for dense grass growth inside a building. It would be interesting, however, to see if someone could create artificial grass that feels and plays authentically.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A tennis court is where the game of tennis is played. It is a firm rectangular surface with a low net stretched across the center. The same surface can be used to play both doubles and singles. Tennis is played on a rectangular flat surface, usually of grass, clay, concrete (hard court) or a synthetic suspended court. The court is 78 feet (23.78 m) long, 39 feet on a side. Its width is 27 feet (8.23 m) for singles matches and 36 feet (10.97 m) for doubles matches. The service line is 21 feet from the net. Additional clear space around the court is needed in order for players to reach overrun balls for a total of 60 feet (18.3 m) wide and 120 feet (36.7 m) long. A net is stretched across the full width of the court, parallel with the baselines, dividing it into two equal ends. The net is 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 m) high at the posts, and 3 feet (0.914 m) high in the center. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Clay plays an important role in everyday life. This versatile mineral is used in housing, improving the environment as a waste treatment material and also in biological applications and medical health care. Clay Surfaces contains 17 chapters which deal with various aspects of natural and man made (synthetic) clay. Well written by experts in both experimental and theoretical areas, this book takes the reader into the fascinating world of the chemistry and physics of clay mineral surfaces and interfaces as well as the complex phenomena on the surfaces involved in clay related systems. This book will provide a better understanding of the intervention mechanisms of interactions of soils in contact with wastes, actions to be taken in the case of chemical spillage, methods to improve the production of food without affecting the ecological balance, increased fixation of carbon in the soil to increase grain production and reduction of carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere. Applications covered describe the role of clays in environmental remediation and the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. This book looks at theory and applications of both natural and modified clays from academic and industrial viewpoints. Peter Fleming introduces the Euroclay Tennis Court surface

What are your opinions on the clay court season?

Would you agree with the hypothesis:
Clay is gay, grass is class?

I think clay is the most boring surface to watch tennis on. For a start, there is only one player who is adept at playing on clay consistently (Nadal). Everyone other quality player, has not had the advantage of playing on this surface during their childhood. Secondly, playing on slow clay courts relies on consistently getting the ball back into play and waiting for your opponent to make an error. Clay tends to reward effort not talent. And nobody tries harder than Nadal.

The grass court season should be prolonged. How about some grass court masters tournaments?? That would be awesome.
"tennis is the best"- Yes I am a Federer fan, but certainly not idiotic. I can assure you my IQ and tennis knowledge is far greater than you or any other Nadal fan. So consider that before performing verbal fellatio on Nadal again. Owned.

Clay is the surface of the workhorse/builder; Grass is the surface for those with style.

yeah it would be great for there to be grass court 1000 masters! clay is alright, but can get a bit boring! but its ok , i love the play at wimbledon (grass play) , hard courts are good , depending on the speed! the faster the better!
