Children's Tennis Racquets
Tennis Coaches/Players...PLEASE HELP!!?

I have an assignment for university and a section of the question is as follows:

You observe a young child holding a tennis racquet half way up the grip.
1. Give a rationale for the child's action in biomechanical terms. Support your answer with a scientific diagram.
2. What implications could this have for the design of sporting equipment for children?

As someone who has never played tennis before, I have no idea why a child would be holding the racquet in this way. Can anyone who knows anything about tennis enlighten me as to why this is right or wrong or at least point me in the direction of someone who may know.

Thank you very much :)

Holding the racket half way up by a young/small child is done because they lack the strength to hold it by the end of the grip. Holding the racket at the center of the grip on an adult/normal racket reduces the 'leverage' of holding it at the end of the grip. (since you don't play tennis think of holding out at length an 8 foot long pipe by the very end of the pipe verses holding it nearer the middle)
Holding the racket half way up the grip doesn't make the racket any lighter but definately makes it easier to handle and swing. As far as a diagram... A racket weighs about 12 ounces and is about 27" in length. A childs hand covers about 2 inches of the grip. When they hold the grip at the end of the racket there is roughly a 13.5 to 1 disadvantage to the child holding up the weight of the racket. By moving their grip on the racket up just 2" the disadvantage becomes about a 6.75-1 disadvantage.... a huge improvement. For the diagram draw a fulcrum (line with a triangle under it). Make the line 27 units long and place the triangle at the 2 unit mark. Draw a second line with the triangle at the 4 unit mark (representing the child holding the racket half way up the grip) you can also draw a 3rd line with the triangle at the 7 unit mark which would represent the child holding the racket at the top of the grip. Under each drawing write down the leverage advantage/disadvantage 1) 27divided by 2 or 13.5 to 1
2) 27 divided by 4 or 6.75 to 1
3) 27 divided by 7 or 3 and 4/7 to 1
Hope that helps! IF it is still unclear email me and I will gladly try again.... TClogic101@yahoo.com

  • Yeah, this isn’t revolutionary or fresh in any way other than the harmonic arrangements, which are flat-out gorgeous. Very impressive chorale work here. (And yep, that’s Ben Folds’s arrangement for sure.)

  • What counts as elevated exposure? Having tooth fillings from eating junk food, or frequently using new tennis racquets and water bottles? Really quite opposite lifestyles.
