disabled in the UK?
My husband had an operation 6 weeks ago to reconstruct his cruciate ligament in his right knee. He is off work for at least 6 months to recuperate and is receiving SSP. We get tax credits but are not entitled to income support as the total of the the SSP and working tax credit is more than the income support threshold. Can my husband get any disability payments? He cannot easily get around ( he is on crutches and his leg is in a brace with the angle set at 60 degrees), and I have to help him with silly things like getting dressed etc. We have two small children and are really struggling financially. I am trying to find part-time work but it is difficult as we have to take into account the fact that my husband needs help to get around and cannot stand for any length of time as he has been told by his consultant not to bear full weight on his leg. Is there any other financial help available to us? We have been awarded housing and council tax benefit but are still struggling.
Maybe you can claim carer's allowance, seeing as your husband needs help with getting dressed etc? That might be worth looking into. Ask the Citizens' Advice Bureau for advice or check out the Department of Work and Pensions website. (http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/)
