How to make a backpack cute!?

I want a new back pack for school, i hate those pink and purple girly backpacks, i just want a good quality plain backpack. But i also want it to look like a female's backpack. I want it to just be a neutral color and then some cute things on it to make it stand out. what are some inexpensive ways to make it my own?

Wide ribbon- doesn't have to be too girly, buttons, felt, fabric paints, button flowers are cute.
